1)    Magnolia schools open for fall classes, with COVID-19 precautions in place- On Monday, August 24, 2020, Magnolia schools open for the fall 2020 semester. In order to achieve a safe and healthy environment, the Magnolia School District has set multiple precautions to help prevent a COVID-19 outbreak on their campuses. One of these precautions includes an option to attend class virtually. According to Magnolia Superintendent John Ward, 30 percent of the 2,800 Magnolia students have signed up attend classes online. The schools have also been given funds to buy protective gear such as handwashing gels, screens, masks and other necessities. (Magnolia Reporter)

 

2)    Little Rock Police investigate slaying of 64-year-old man- Just after 2 a.m. on Monday, officers responded to a call regarding a man lying in a front yard of a residence “with apparent trauma to his body”. The body was identified as Larry Christian who had been reported missing by UAMS police on Sunday. The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing. (Arkansas Democratic Gazette)

 

3)    New drive-in movie theater to open in Little Rock- At the end of August, a new drive-in movie theater will open in Little Rock located at 6700 Allied Way. According to MP Productions, the cinema will be able to hold up to 200 cars and will be spaced accordingly to maintain social distancing. Movies will be shown every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting August 27th. (KATV News)

 

4)    TikTok sues Trump administration over US ban- The popular social media app TikTok announced on Monday that they would be suing the trump administration over the government’s pending ban against the app. TikTok stated that there is “not any evidence to justify an extreme action.” The company has argued the ban has “potential to strip the rights of its community”. 5)    Tropical storms Marco, Laura put US coastlines on alert- Two tropical storms are making their way towards US coastlines. Although tropical storm Marco started weakening as of Monday, there is still fear of heavy rain, strong winds, and tornadoes as the storm begins to make its way towards the Louisiana and Texas coasts. Tropical storm Laura is beginning to strengthen and will become a very dangerous hurricane when it hits the US. Although it is uncertain when and where Laura will hit, it seems the Louisiana and Texas coast will need to be on high alert for both tropical storms Marco and Laura. (Fox News)

 

6)    National Zoo’s female giant panda has a new ‘miracle’ cub- The National Zoo’s female giant panda gave birth to a cub on Friday. Mei Xiang, at the age of 22, became the oldest panda to give birth in the United States. The zoo has referred to Mei’s cub as a ‘miracle’ because Mei had less than a 1 percent chance of giving birth again. Viewers were able to keep an update on Mei Xiang on the zoo’s black and white panda webcam. This is also the first giant panda cub in Washington in five years, the zoo said. (The Washington Post)

 

7)    Israeli youths unearth 1,100-year-old gold coins from Abbasid era- 425 gold coins buried in a clay jar were found by Israeli youths volunteering at an archeological dig in central Israel. The coins date back to the early Islamic period, roughly 1,100 years ago. It is a mystery who owned the coins and why they were left there. The directors of the excavation said in a statement, “The person who buried this treasure 1,100 years ago must have expected to retrieve it, and even secured the vessel with a nail so that it would not move.” The coins would have been worth a large sum at the time they were buried. 8)   Hong Kong man was reinfected by the coronavirus, researchers say- According to researchers at the University of Hong Kong, a Hong Kong citizen has become the first confirmed patient to test positive for COVID-19 a second time. The finding suggests that some patients who are infected with the coronavirus only have a short-lived immunity. The Hong Kong man was hospitalized with COVID-19 in March and was discharged in April. After 4 months, he was infected again after returning to Hong Kong from Spain. He was hospitalized but has remained asymptomatic according to study. Although this may seem like a cause for panic, a professor of immunobiology at Yale University says otherwise, she tweeted this response after the study was released, “This is no cause for alarm- this is a textbook example of how immunity should work.” (NBC News)

 

9)    Street outside Staples Center will be renamed Kobe Bryant Boulevard, Los Angeles City Council says- An announcement was made Monday that Figueroa street outside of Staples Center will be renamed Kobe Bryant Boulevard. The street will be renamed to honor Kobe Bryant after he, his daughter Gianna, and seven other victims died in a helicopter crash last January. (ESPN)

 

10) Sofia Vergara says she was ‘never a victim’ on Ellen DeGeneres talk show after old clip resurfaces- Over the past few months, there have been accusations that Ellen DeGeneres has mistreated her employees, as well as some of her guests, on her popular talk show. There have been many videos resurfacing where viewers say Ellen was ‘mistreating’ her guests on the show, however, after a video of Ellen mocking Sofia Vergara’s English-speaking skills resurfaced, Vergara assured viewers that she ‘never felt offended’ by the talk show host. 11) Lori Laughlin sentenced to two months in prison for college admissions scandal- Full house star Lori Laughlin was sentenced 2 months in federal prison after she and her husband bribed the University of Southern California $500,000 to pose their daughters as part of the crew team last year. After her husband served a 5-month prison sentence for the crime, Laughlin pleaded guilty last May. She will pay a fine of $150,00 as well as 100 hours of community service. 12) ‘University of Alabama’ is trending on twitter- The University of Alabama is trending on twitter after it was released that they have over 560 positive COVID-19 cases on their campus after resuming classes last week. The University has announced that their isolation space is currently at 20 percent capacity. The institution has also stated that the numbers include students, faculty, and staff. (Twitter)

 

13)  ‘Chocolate snow’ dusts swiss town after factory malfunction- After a ventilation system malfunctioned last Friday in the Swiss town of Olton, the citizens awoke to find a sweet surprise had appeared overnight. As a result of a minor defect and strong-winds, chocolate powder from the factory spread around the immediate area coating the ground in cocoa. Much of the town shared their excitement on twitter stating that “2020 is turning around.” (Fox News)

 

14) NFL says false coronavirus alarm shouldn’t distract from leagues encouraging testing results- After testing 11 NFL teams, 77 coronavirus tests came back positive last Saturday. According to the NFL, all the tests turned out to be false positives. The tests all came from the same laboratory in New Jersey. Although the tests resulted in false positives, NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills reassured the public that there has not been any major outbreak of the virus and that the staff, coaches, and players are all following protocols. It was announced that the false positives likely resulted from contamination. (New York Daily News)

 

15) ‘Dead woman’ found to be breathing at Detroit funeral home- A twenty-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her home in Detroit on Sunday. After trying to revive the woman for 30 minutes, the medical staff pronounced her dead based on the medical evidence provided. The woman was about to be embalmed at the James H. Cole funeral home when she opened her eyes after an hour of being pronounced dead. She was confirmed to be breathing and an emergency medical crew was called to examine the woman. The city has stated that the police and fire department followed the procedures necessary, however, they are conducting an internal investigation. (U.S. News and World Report)
